One would think that the ongoing coronavirus crisis would leave a huge dent in the physical sales department, but boxed copies sold surprisingly well in the UK, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare coming in first.
It turns out that UK's retail sold almost 350,000 boxed copies, which is quite the feat once the numbers are crunched a bit.
Namely, the launch of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which was the biggest launch in 2020 so far, skewed the numbers from the week before, making this week's results 28 per cent lower than the week before.
When compared to the pre-Animal Crossing week, however, last week's boxed sales actually soared by 124 per cent. Bearing in mind all the closures and globally implemented social distancing, it's quite the win for the physical market.
As for last week's results, it seems like Warzone's launch didn't cannibalise Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's sales, as Infinity Ward's shooter reported 78 per cent on-week sales increase. This helped it jump back from third to first place, basically switching places with Animal Crossing.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons' launch week is undoubtedly one of the most successful weeks in the franchise's history, but the following week saw Nintendo's sales plummet by 81 per cent.
Granted, second-week sales are always dramatically lower, so it's nothing out of the ordinary, but Nintendo's stock shortages played a huge role in this.
