Since its launch in February, Helldivers 2 has seen remarkable success. Sony recently confirmed that Arrowhead's third-person shooter sold 12 million copies within its first 12 weeks, making it Sony's fastest-selling PlayStation release to date.
This success has led to significant growth at Arrowhead, which has put strain on Johan Pilestedt's ability to dedicate time to the studio's flagship title. In response, Pilestedt has decided to take matters into his own hands.
Johan Pilestedt, CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios and Director of Helldivers 2, announced that he is stepping down from his position to assume the role of Chief Creative Officer at the studio. Pilestedt hopes this transition will allow him to focus more on Helldivers 2 and its community.
Details on Johan Pilestedt's Announcement
Pilestedt revealed on Twitter that Shams Jorjani has taken over as Arrowhead's CEO. Jorjani brings with him 12 years of experience at Paradox Interactive in various leadership roles, as well as experience as chairman of an indie publisher and advisor to multiple game companies. Pilestedt explained that over the past year, he has been increasingly drawn to the business side of Arrowhead, leaving less time for creative endeavors.
He believes that Jorjani's appointment will benefit both himself and the company, allowing him to fully dedicate his attention to Arrowhead's latest game and its growing community. There are other changes afoot at Arrowhead regarding Helldivers 2.
A community manager recently announced that the developers plan to take more time than usual with the next update, particularly focusing on weapon balancing. This area can be tricky, especially for a shooter like Helldivers 2.
But it appears that Arrowhead has bigger plans for Helldivers 2 than just balancing updates. A recent leak revealed one of the enemies from the game's unreleased faction, the Illuminate. This faction seems to strike a balance between the ranged-focused Automatons and the melee-focused Terminids, possessing both ranged and melee capabilities.
It remains uncertain when the Illuminate faction will be added to Helldivers 2, but Pilestedt's transition to CCO could potentially expedite development efforts, not only for the Illuminate but for all future Arrowhead content. Arrowhead has made it clear that it views Helldivers 2 as a live-service title that will continue to receive updates for the foreseeable future.
