Sony will not move forward with their PlayStation Network account linking for Helldivers 2 on Steam. The publisher revealed that they heard the feedback and are still learning what is best for PC players.

Sony found themselves in a proper mess due to the controversial decision to introduce a PlayStation Network account linking to Helldivers 2 on PC. If you're even partially familiar with the Steam community, you probably know that they did not take this decision lightly.

In mere hours, Helldivers 2 dropped from having Very Positive reviews to Overwhelmingly Negative as players started review bombing the game, to protest Sony's forced account linking.

To make things worse, Sony's decision led to Helldivers 2 being delisted in all the countries where Sony themselves do not allow a PlayStation Network account. It's safe to say that the whole thing was a massive PR disaster for Sony, who, in the end, decided to backtrack on everything.

"Helldivers fans -- we’ve heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward," Sony announced via PlayStation profile on X.

The publisher added that they are still learning what is best for PC players and will update them on what their future plans are for PSN account linking on PC.

Sony
Ghost of Tsushima is finally to PC in May 2024.
Ghost of Tsushima is Sony's next game to hit PC but luckily, it won't require account linking, at least not for single-player

Some players argue that Sony's only mistake was to make the account linking mandatory, instead of incentivizing players by offering cool cosmetics to those who link their account, as some other publishers did with their games.

Sony's next game in line to hit PC is Ghost of Tsushima, and it's already been confirmed that players won't be forced to link their Steam and PSN accounts to play single-player story mode. However, if you want to play the game's multiplayer called Legends, you will have to link your PSN account. It remains to be seen how players respond to this one.
