Helldivers 2 has adopted a unique approach to implementing sweeping balancing changes or introducing new stratagems. They do so directly on the live build. Unlike many live service games that utilize public test servers (PTS) for player feedback and tweaking before full release, Helldivers 2 follows a different path.
In this unconventional process, if nerfs are deemed overly harsh or buffs excessively potent, the community must await the next patch to address their concerns. However, Helldivers 2 is poised to embrace change with the potential introduction of its own public test servers, offering players the opportunity to trial updates and provide feedback before they go live.
How did the discussion go?
"Are there talks of [implementing] a test server for Helldivers 2?" @FruityF00L asked in the official Discord. "So that we are able to test new weapons and stratagems before they get implemented into the live game?"
"Yes, there are!" community manager Thomas 'Twinbeard' Petersson replied. "Can't say for sure if there will be or at what stage we're in regarding setting [something] up, but alternatives similar to that are being discussed, yes."
In many instances, such as with PUBG, LoL, etc., a public test server (PTS) is a distinct downloadable version of the game. Typically, these testing servers are available exclusively on PCs, rendering console players unable to participate. However, fans of Helldivers 2 have come up with a solution to unite players across all platforms.
"Drop us onto a planet labeled BETA or TEST or something," proposed XannyMax2. "The new guns could be scattered on the ground or accessible via a special stratagem that calls them down. Players can then pick them up and use them, providing feedback through social channels outside the game. Once the testing phase is complete, that particular test environment could be removed, and the Warbond that unlocks it could be released."
Arrowhead, the developer, seems to be considering the implementation of a test server, as discussions about the idea have surfaced. While the specifics of how they will execute this plan remain uncertain, the fact that the concept is being actively discussed is promising for players who anticipate improvements and updates to the game.
