During last night's The Game Awards show, Bandai Namco Entertainment have officially revealed Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, the first mainline entry in seven years, launching in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The eight iteration of the flight shooter is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, and will feature a deep campaign mode where players become legendary ace pilot "Wings of Theve" fighting to reclaim the occupied homeland Federation of Central Usea.
Strong campaign focus
The "Fall of Wings" announcement trailer introduces campaign narrative where players assume legendary ace pilot role "Wings of Theve" fighting for occupied Federation of Central Usea (FCU). With the nation's navy shattered and territory controlled by the Republic of Sotoa, players lead three new fighter pilots reclaiming their lost homeland whilst carrying the hope of every FCU citizen.
The campaign unfolds in Strangereal, Ace Combat's fictitious universe, where military drama and pilot bonds drive emotionally charged storytelling. It's safe to say that the trailer puts heavy emphasis on the story, even more than the actual dogfighting, which suggests Bandai is pretty confident in the game in terms of narrative.
Unreal Engine 5 visual showcase
As mentioned, Ace Combat 8 will leverage Unreal Engine 5 and aims to deliver realistic cloud expanses, finely rendered terrain, and atmospheric weather effects. From what we've seen in the trailer, there's a lot to like here - sky and clouds look stunning while jets, cockpits and characters don't lack detail either.
One of the things that caught my eye is how the first-person perspective gives the game a strong sense of immersion. Solid cinematics also add another layer of realism.
Multiplayer mode also confirmed
Wings of Theve will also feature multiplayer on launch, allowing you to battle online, though specific details remain unannounced. Bandai Namco promises to reveal "many exciting details between now and launch" including specifics on the multiplayer mode.
