It's been a big week for the Total War and the fans of this strategy franchise. Following the recent announcement of Total War Medieval 3, Creative Assembly (CA)have officially unveiled Total War: Warhammer 40,000 at The Game Awards, marking the franchise's first venture into science-fantasy warfare and debut on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Actor David Harbour (Stranger Things) introduced the announcement trailer whilst revealing he'll portray a mysterious character in-game, bringing celebrity star power to the grim darkness of the far future.
Four factions wage galactic war
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 features Space Marines, Astra Militarum, Orks, and Aeldari as launch factions, and each of these will offer distinct playstyles across campaign and tactical battles, say CA.
The gameplay loop outside of the battles will consist of players crusading through a galactic sandbox, capturing planets, upgrading fleets, and managing war economies.
CA promise big war-torn worlds with destructible terrain and diverse biomes. We got to see a glimpse of the chaos on the battlefield, right at the end of the trailer and I have to say that It looks pretty impressive, even for an alpha build.
For the first time in Total War history, players will get to customise armies beyond unit selection. Factions can be shaped from title and heraldry to iconography and wargear.
First time on consoles
Total War: Warhammer 40,000 marks the franchise's PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S debut alongside PC release. No launch date announced has been announced yet but the game is available to wishlist across platforms. Given that the footage we've seen in the trailer is pre-alpha, this one will take a while so don't expect it soon.
It's safe to say that the epic fantasy Total War: Warhammer series transformed Creative Assembly's fortunes, delivering three critically acclaimed entries and establishing the studio's reputation for adapting fantasy settings. Whether lightning strikes twice with 40,000's sci-fi warfare or struggles under different mechanical demands remains the critical question but given the CA's reputation, it's safe to say that fans will be ecstatic with today's news.
