Firaxis Games are officially helming the development of the next Civilization game, it's been announced today by publisher 2K.
Civilization fans will be ecstatic to hear that a brand-new game is in development by Firaxis Games , the studio behind many other Civilization and XCOM games and the most recent tactics RPG Marvel's Midnight Suns.
The development of a brand new Civilization game was previously hinted in Firaxis job listings, which stated that the studio were hiring for their next AAA strategy game.
Sadly, Firaxis and 2K did not reveal any details about the project or when could it see the light of day. We presume it's still a couple of years away so don't expect to play it anytime soon. Though, an official announcement could be coming later this year, if the stars align.
2K also announced today that Firaxis Games Chief Operating Officer, Heather Hazen, has been promoted to Studio Head and will lead the studio forward as they focus on the development of the next Civilization but also post-launch content for Marvel's Midnight Suns.
The promotion of Hazen means that Jake Solomon, the creative director of the XCOM franchise and Marvel's Midnight Suns is departing the studio after more than 25 years with the organisation, which is certainly not the news that fans of these games wanted to hear.
"We are excited to welcome Heather Hazen as the new Studio Head of Firaxis Games, and believe she will continue to drive the success Firaxis has consistently delivered as part of 2K’s independent studio model," said David Ismailer, President of 2K. "2K and Firaxis Games are deeply grateful for the foundation that Steve Martin set during his time at the studio, shepherding more than 30 game launches across three genre-defining franchises, and for ensuring a smooth transition for Heather into her new role."
The exact reason behind these decisions has not been revealed by 2K but it's been rumoured that Solomon is leaving due to poor sales of Marvel's Midnight Suns.
