The new strategy game, Civilization 7, was unveiled by Studio Firaxis Games, showcasing gameplay innovations, a new narrator, and a release date.

Studio Firaxis Games presented in detail its new strategy game Sid Meier's Civilization 7, revealing the main innovations in the gameplay, the new narrator and the release date.

The first thing to note is that Civilization 7 will not follow the same visual style as its predecessor, Civilization VI. Instead, it will strike a balance between the cartoony look of the previous game and a more realistic approach. The game introduces several major changes to the core mechanics, marking a fresh direction for the beloved strategy series.

The release date is February 11, 2025. As already announced, this will be the first Civilization that will appear simultaneously on multiple platforms, namely PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

And here are some key highlights:

  • the game will be divided into three long eras: the ancient era, the exploration era, and the modern era
  • each era will culminate in some crisis event that the player will have to face
  • players will be able to change which civilization they control when transitioning from each era
  • players will be able to choose a leader for their civilization regardless of whether he belongs to their nation or not
  • Instead of cities, Settlers now first establish money generating settlements, settlements can have permanent specializations, and can later turn into classic cities
  • cities will no longer expand automatically, but the player will have control over the direction of expansion, farms and mines will be added automatically
  • a new type of unit is introduced: commanders; only those units gain XP and promotion, bring passive bonuses to nearby units, and can issue orders to them
  • the "influence" mechanic is introduced, which can be used for positive or negative diplomatic interactions, e.g. concluding military pacts or imposing sanctions on other civilizations
  • online multiplayer will have cross-play support and will be playable in 6-8 players depending on the different eras, and there will be a choice to play all eras or one specific era

The developers note that entering the game for new players will be easier than before, with a redesigned tutorial. If I'm not mistaken, the series will have a narrator for the first time, and it will be actress Gwendolyn Christie, known for her role as Brienne in the Game of Thrones series.

And in the end, let's talk about the prices. This will be a slightly more expensive Civilization than the previous ones – 70 euros will cost the standard edition.

There will also be a Deluxe Edition for 100 euros that brings several DLC content and early access to the game from February 6, 2025. Then there is a digital Founders Edition for 130 euros that brings the same as the Deluxe version plus another expansion that will appear sometime in the future.
