The wait is finally over for Bond fans. IO Interactive has delivered the first proper look at 007 First Light during Sony's PlayStation State of Play, confirming a March 27, 2026 release date and revealing extensive gameplay footage of their original James Bond origin story.
While the visuals and gameplay look pretty amazing in this demo, some concerns can be raised about the performance and some dumb distraction mechanics but there's still plenty of time for IO Interactive to iron these out.
Patrick Gibson (Dexter: Original Sin, The OA) will voice the young James Bond, joined by a stellar cast including Priyanga Burford as M, Alastair Mackenzie as Q, and Lennie James (Fear the Walking Dead) as Bond's mentor John Greenway. The gameplay showcase revealed missions set in Slovakia during an exclusive chess tournament and a lavish Kensington gala, giving players their first taste of Bond's early espionage career.
Gameplay styles
Right from the get-go, it's clear that IO Interactive is leveraging its Hitman expertise with what they're calling "Creative Approach" gameplay. This system revolves around four core pillars that define the Bond experience. Spycraft emphasizes stealth mechanics like eavesdropping, pickpocketing, and environmental investigation. The Instinct system lets Bond manipulate enemies, bluff out of sticky situations, or enhance combat precision. Q Branch gadgets integrate seamlessly into missions for hacking, distraction, and tactical solutions.
Combat blends ranged shooting with visceral melee encounters, featuring a unique escalation system. Bond starts with non-lethal takedowns, but when enemies escalate to deadly force, his License to Kill activates, unlocking expert marksmanship that flows naturally between gunplay and hand-to-hand combat.
Beyond the stealth-focused gameplay, 007 First Light promises classic Bond spectacle with high-speed chases, aerial combat aboard hijacked planes, and being thrown into open sky scenarios. IO Interactive say these cinematic set-pieces are designed to showcase Bond's evolution from aspiring agent to elite spy.
Pricing and pre-order details
The game launches across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC for $69.99. Pre-orders automatically upgrade to the Deluxe Edition, including 24-hour early access and exclusive cosmetics. Amazon.com will offer a Specialist Edition with unique packaging and an exclusive Classic Tux outfit.
With IO Interactive's proven stealth gameplay expertise and a fresh take on Bond's origin story, 007 First Light could be the definitive James Bond gaming experience fans have been waiting for. I can't wait to finally get my hands on this one!
