The long-rumoured Call of Duty movie is finally happening. On September 2, 2025, it was announced that Paramount Pictures and Activision had reached a major deal to produce and distribute a live-action adaptation of the video game franchise.

The announcement was made with both companies promising to stay faithful to the action-packed spirit of the games while reaching a mass audience on the big screen.

Paramount is “all in” on bringing Call of Duty to the big screen

In a statement, Paramount CEO David Ellison, who has previously shepherded the much-lauded Top Gun: Maverick to success, expressed his personal investment in the project. “As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty this is truly a dream come true,” Ellison said.

“From the first Allied campaigns in the original Call of Duty, through Modern Warfare and Black Ops, I’ve spent countless hours playing this franchise that I absolutely love. Being entrusted by Activision and players worldwide to bring this extraordinary storytelling universe to the big screen is both an honor and a responsibility that we don’t take lightly.”

Ellison added that Paramount was “all in” when it came to bringing Call of Duty to the big screen and was looking forward to honoring the legacy of the property while thrilling longtime fans and introducing a new generation to the Call of Duty brand.

About the Call of Duty Franchise

Call of Duty is a first-person shooter franchise developed by multiple studios (Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games, among others). The series has sold over 500 million copies as of 2023, making it the best-selling FPS franchise of all time.

Activision’s franchise has more than 100 million monthly active players and has generated more than $30 billion in revenue as of 2024. There are several highly popular subseries, such as Modern Warfare and Black Ops.

Most recently, the series’ latest installment Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 released in October 2024. Black Ops 7 will be coming on November 14, 2025. For fans of the Call of Duty games, the announcement means the long-awaited video game adaptation will actually be happening.

It could be an opportunity for Paramount to adapt one of the world’s most popular IPs with huge crossover potential, and for Activision, another step into mainstream media beyond video games.

No release window or details about casting have been shared, but if Paramount can deliver, Call of Duty fans might soon get to experience their favorite game on the big screen as a full-fledged cinematic event.
