Escape from Tarkov features a lot of different guns, and with different guns come different ammo types. This guide will give you a quick rundown on how to know what ammo your gun needs and how to pick the perfect match for it.

Escape from Tarkov features over 150 different types of ammo, and for those who are only just picking the game up, it might be a little overwhelming to know which ammo types they might need and which ammo types are not as necessary.

Battlestate games have taken their time designing the ammo, and every type of ammo has different damage, penetration, velocity, and so on. Now, this might not mean much to a new player, but as the game goes on, it will matter more.

To start off the guide, we will show you how to recognize what type of ammo your gun needs and what caliber it is. This information can usually be gathered from the gun's icon or when the gun is inspected by double-clicking it.

The caliber will be located at the bottom left or at the bottom of the stats, right above the attachments, when you double-click the icon. The caliber is important because it determines what type of ammo your gun will use. The two guns in the image below cannot use the same type of ammo since one uses 556 and the other uses 762.

While that might seem very straight-forward, Escape of Tarkov features many (and we mean many) different types of 556 and 762 ammo. To know which ammo you use, you will need to start using an ammo chart. If you're not familiar with an ammo chart, we've got you covered.

The ammo chart can be found at this link and it is updated regularly. When looking at a certain ammo type, you will want to look at the damage and pen value columns in the chart.

If you find that too much of a hassle, you can simply look to the right side of the chart and follow the colour-coded section, where 0 is the lowest and 6 is the highest performing against different classes of armour.

When it comes to the recoil column, it calculates how much kick your gun will have after firing, and the bullets with more damage will have higher recoil, and the other way around.

Finally, there are certain terms that should be mentioned to clarify the confusion about the ammo:

  1. "Failure to feed chance" refers to the chance of a bullet jamming in a player's gun
  2. "Durability Burn" refers to the amount of damage the bullet does to the gun
  3. "Heat" is taken into consideration when there are automatic guns in play; It increases chances of jamming and missfiring
