Ranni the Witch is one of the NPCs in Elden Ring that you meet early on in the game. She has a long questline and here's what you need to do to complete it.
Ranni's questline is one of the biggest side quests in Elden Ring and once completed, it rewards players with the iconic Moonlight Greatsword or Dark Moon Greatsword, which is the official name in Elden Ring.
Getting to the point of receiving the greatsword is not an easy task and you'll have to slay a couple of very hard bosses on the way and visit some spectacular locations.
With this guide, we aim to make Ranni's questline a bit easier to understand. So let's get to it.
Ranni the Witch questline details and locations:
Limgrave
- First encounter: You can find Ranni at the Church of Elleh in Limgrave, very early in the game.
Note: If you missed Ranni early in the game, she can be found in her tower once you defeat Radahn.
Liurnia of the Lakes
- After talking to Ranni in Limgrave, her next location is atop Ranni's Rise in Three Sisters in the north region of Liurnia of Lakes.
- There, she'll tell you to find hidden treasure and speak to three people: Blaidd, Seluvis and War Counsellor Iji.
- All three of these will appear on the first floor of her tower.
- Blaidd is then found in the Siofra River (vast underground area; entrance in Limgrave) where he tells you that Preceptor Seluvis (found at Seluvi's Rise) has some info for you.
- Preceptor Seluvis will inform you that Sorceress Sellen (Waypoint Ruins, Limgrave) might know something. They also give you a Seluvi's Introduction note.
- Give the note to Sellen who then tells you that you must defeat Radahn (access via the portal at Redmane Castle in Caelid ) who stopped the stars.
- Once you beat Radahn, one of the stars will fall south of Mistwood. Go there and you'll spot an Entrance to Nokron which will ultimately lead you to the treasure of Nokron, which is the Fingerslayer Blade.
Note: You unlock the Three Sisters area by beating Royal Knight Loretta in Caria Manor.
Returning to Ranni
- Return the Fingerslayer Blade to Ranni and she'll reward you with the Carian Inverted Statue, which is used to get to the top of the Divine Tower of Liurnia.
- To get to the Divine Tower of Liurnia, go to Carian Study Hall, which is East of Academy Gate Town in Liurnia and place the Statue on the altar.
- Once you get there, you'll find Cursemark of Death on Ranni's body.
- You can then go back to Renna's Rise and travel to Ainsel River Main where you'll find mini Ranni.
- Talk to the doll at the grace on the river and Ranni will tell you to kill Baleful Shadow.
- Follow the river, kill (or run past) the giant creature and pass the ruins into the caves and you'll eventually reach Nokstella, Eternal City grace.
- Baleful Shadow is found at the very end of the lower area, through the cave south of the Nokstella Waterfall Basin Site of Grace.
- Once you defeat it, Ranni will reward you with Discarded Palace Key.
Wrapping up the questline + reward
- Discarded Palace Key is used to unlock a chest in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library (near Rennala) that will give you the Dark Moon Ring.
- Loot the Ring and travel back to the Ainsel River, Lake of Rot.
- Find the Grand Cloister.
- Grand Cloister is on the right side of the Lake of Rot. (Map below)
- In Grand Cloister, drop down, head straight towards the stairs but make a turn left before the stairs.
- On the waterfall, you'll spot a coffin. Enter it, it will take you to Astel boss fight area.
- Once you beat Astel, you can continue to Moonlight Altar to reach the Cathedral of Manus Celes (past the dragon).
- There, you'll find Ranni's body. Use the Dark Moon Ring to free Ranni and she'll give you the Dark Moon Greatsword (Moonlight Greatsword).
