One of the core mechanics in Baldur's Gate 3 may not be as obvious as it should be but thankfully, the search for it is not too complicated.
Resting in Baldur's Gate 3 is highly important, just like in any D&D game, be it tabletop or a video game. Unfortunately, the UI may not necessarily have obvious pointers on how to take a rest so here is a quick rundown of the mechanic.
How to take a rest in Baldur's Gate 3
To take a rest, hover your mouse over the small icon to the bottom right of the screen, called Camp and Resting Menu. Click it and you will get three options:
- Short Rest
- Long Rest
- Go to Camp
Click the option you want and the resting will commence. With the third option, you will simply be moved to the camp instance, where you can initiate resting as well or skip it.
What resting does in Baldur's Gate 3
Resting is primarily used to restore the party's spells and health. Spells and abilities that require short or long rests will say so in the tooltip if you hover your mouse over them.
Some of the early examples are Action Surge and Second Wind for Fighters, which are replenished after a short rest.
Similarly, Astarion will gain the Happy buff after using Vampire Bite on a target while the victim will get the Bloodless debuff until a long rest is completed.
Restoring health via long rests will also require the usage of Camp Supplies so make sure you loot them everywhere you find them. After all, they have their own sack in your inventory page and, therefore, they do no take up actual inventory space so there is no downside to looting them. Unless you steal and someone sees you doing it.
