Finding the Nightsong is a quest that spans three Acts in Baldur's Gate 3 and here is how to go through them.

Find the Nightsong is a quest that can be obtained close to the start of Baldur's Gate 3 but it will only conclude in Act 3, unless you go down the evil road.

Act 1

You can start the quest in multiple ways.

In the opening part of the game, you will run into a group of goblins attacking a Druid grove that's currently hosting Tiefling refugees. Clear up the enemies and interact with Zevlor and Aradin inside the gates in order for the Tiefling Paladin to punch the numbskull adventurer unconscious. At that point you can pickpocket a contract from him at no risk since he is sleeping tight. Reading the contract will start the quest.

If you don't do that, you will later encounter Aradin on the road to Blighted Village. If you talk to him and ask about the contract, you can start the quest there.

Provided you didn't take that opportunity either, you can meet Liam in the Goblin camp where he is being tortured for information. You can ask him about the group's business and the Nightsong, which will also kick off the quest.

After obtaining it, the quest will not progress until you reach the Shadow Cursed Lands.

Act 2

In Shadow Cursed Lands, you will eventually stumble onto Shar's Temple, where you can pass the gauntlet with multiple puzzles.

Paintings puzzle

The first one is in a mausoleum where you need to activate paintings in the correct order:

  1. Moonrise Towers
  2. Grief
  3. General

The answer lies in the darkness

After that, you will have a room with a statue in it with the only clue being "The answer lies in the darkness". Do no approach the statue. Move around it in wide arcs to avoid getting pushed by the force field. You will need a decent Perception and Sleight of Hand in this room in order to spot and defuse the numerous traps.

The goal is to visit the four chambers around the one with the statue and activate the levers in them. When you pull a lever, a chandelier will lower in the main room. Lower all four of them and then interact with them to put the lights out. The room will get much darker but will show runes that form a maze. Reach the statue while avoiding the runes and you will be able to loot the Umbral Gem, which will be used later on.

Balthazar

You can encounter Balthazar in the temple. He is seeking to bring Nightsong to Ketheric Thorm. You can ally with him or seek Nightsong for yourself, which will put you at odds with the undead abomination. If that happens to be the case, you may want to kill him as soon as possible.

If you pretend to want to work with him and then pass a Persuasion check to get help, he will give you a bell that summons Flesh. You can use the bell to get Flesh alone, kill him and get rid of a huge headache in the fight with Balthazar.

Soft-step trial

You can do Shar's trials in any order you like but you will most likely stumble upon the Soft-step first. After sacrificing blood at the altar, the objective here is to pass unseen through a small maze of rooms and hallways, pull a lever and loot the Umbral Shard.

If you are having trouble sneaking past the two patrolling shadows, cast Invisibility on the character with the best Sleight of Hand stat and let them infiltrate alone. You can use a potion, a spell or even a scroll. The last option is perhaps the best since there is a scroll on a skeleton on the nearby bench.

Self-same trial

This trial will require you to beat a party of doppelgangers. They look and act just like your own party and will attempt to ambush you but having someone with high Perception will allow you to ambush them instead.

The trick in this trial is to use each party member to attack only their own doppelganger unless you want your characters' abilities to be reduced by one due to the curse. However, after one character defeats their doppelganger, they are free to attack anyone else's. Loot the Umbral Gem and go to the next trial.

Faith Leap trial

This is probably the most challenging one as you will have to memorise the path to the Umbral Gem and not fall off it. Thankfully, there is also a map at the beginning of the trial, allowing you to have a better orientation in the room. Make sure you save scum a lot here because extrapolating the floor map may not be precise at all times.

You can also switch to the Tactical View (default "O" on keyboard), which will give you the top-down camera for easier navigation.

Silent Library

The entire room is covered in a bubble that causes silence which is less than ideal if you rely on spellcasting. To get rid of it, kill the dark portal in the middle of the room and then deal with the rest of the enemies.

In order to open the secret chamber here, you will need to loot a book called Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger. It is in the book shelf immediately to your right as you enter the library.

Take the book to the altar, insert it and the secret door will open, allowing you to loot the Spear of Night.

Additional Umbral Gem

You can also kill a group of demons in the nearby halls to loot another Umbral Gem but you might want Yurgir alive for later. If you want to avoid killing him, you will need to go to the base of the absolutely massive Shar statue where all the rats are scurrying. Kill a pile of rats, then the Dark Justiciar and then talk to Yurgir, who will just leave with his posse.

Finding the Nightsong

After you've collected enough Umbral Gems, you can activate a floating platform that will take you to the portal to Shar's realm. Enter it, jump down the rocks and if you haven't killed Balthazar previously, you will find him here.

This is a risky fight as both he and his summons can push your team into instant deaths. If you previously crafted a Sussur greatsword, dagger or sickle, make sure you use it on him to prevent him from casting anything or calling the undead reinforcements.

Once the fight is done, you can decide what to do with Nightsong.

Let her live or let Shadowhear kill her

During the brief meditation before you entered Shar's realm, Shadowheart received instructions from her deity to kill the Nightsong. She will want to do it at this point and if you don't want Nightsong to die you will either have to fight Shadowheart or persuade her not to do it.

If you let Shadowheart kill Nightsong, a ton of friendly NPCs will die off-screen and Karlach's personal quest will be derailed.

If you persuade Shadowheart to spare Nightsong, you will be able to continue her personal quest along with all the quests from the people who didn't die as a result of her actions.

Should Nightsong live to see another day, you will have her as an ally in two major battles to come during Act 2 while the quest regarding her continues in Act 3.

Act 3

In Act 3, you will be able to finally meet Lorroakan, the wizard who put out the contract on Nightsong in the first place. When you meet him and ask about his motivations, it becomes apparent that he wants to use Nightsong the same way Ketheric Thorm was doing beforehand.

You can sell her out at this point or go back to your camp and warn her about the wizard's malicious intentions. At this point, she insists to go to his dome and fight him there.

If you sell her out, you will be paid quite a bit of gold but will not have Nightsong nor Isobel as your ally in a massive fight in the future.

If you help her deal with Lorroakan, Nightsong will provide massive help in the final battle, along with Isobel's invaluable party-wide healing.
