Alan Wake 2: How to progress through the subway

The first encounter with New York as Dark Place in Alan Wake 2 and progressing to the subway can be a really confusing task. In this guide, we will explain how to progress through this area of the game.

Alan Wake 2 is a way more complicated game compared to its predecessor, with a lot of new mechanics and much more ways to get around, whether through the mental rooms or through shifting environments like overlaps and light dimensions.

When you gain control of Alan Wake for the first time and enter the city of New York in its dark version, your main task will be to enter the subway in order to progress through the game using the Angel Lamp and shifting light dimensions.

This particular task can be very confusing since the game does not explain exactly how this lamp works. Only then can you use it to manipulate time and space, giving some objects different shapes or even making them disappear entirely. If reaching the subway, or more precisely, changing light behaviour inside the subway, is confusing to you as well, this guide can help.

How to progress through subway in Dark Place

The key concept to understand here is how Angel Lamp actually works. To access the subway and alter the reality within it, your initial task is to locate a stable light source located at the far end of the alley. Look to the left of the subway kiosk to find it.

Following a brief cutscene and story development, activate the lamp, then return to the subway entrance. Re-activate the lamp at the light source located near the kiosk. You'll notice that the entrance to the subway will appear where there was once a pile of garbage. Now notice the circle located above the health indicator. Previously, it contained a light bulb symbol but is now vacant.

This indicates that your lamp requires recharging from a light source. So, refrain from entering the subway just yet. Instead, take the time to explore the area to the right of the kiosk entrance, where you will encounter an NPC, a few echoes, a save room, and an abundance of resources. When you exit this area, near the parked taxi, you'll encounter a new light source.

Activate this light source, and your lamp will be charged. Run towards the subway entrance if you do not want to bother with the spectres, because there will be a ton of them in this area once you activate the light source. Now, with your lamp fully charged, descend the stairs to the subway and change reality. Use the subway pass you obtained earlier, and you will be set to progress further through this level.
