Ever since Bethesda stated that Fallout 76 will be an online survival game, we have been yapping about the impeding microtransaction system. There is now a clear picture about it, just over a month away from the game's release date.
Introduction of a card based perk system, around the same time when people were talking about microtransactions in Fallout 76 raised several alarms as everyone thought Bethesda would go full EA and start selling progression power via loot boxes. Thankfully, they turned out to be false alarms, as the company quickly dismissed these claims and stated that the microtransactions will work differently in Fallout 76.
Players will be able to purchase Atoms, which will be an alternative currency in the game, which will mostly serve as a way of purchasing cosmetics. On top of the currency not being integrated into the game's core progression system, they will also be obtainable via in-game means. It remains to be seen whether players will need to grind their skin off in order to get enough for a pirate hat or something along those lines.
There is currently no information about how much the Atoms will cost in real life, but Xbox One players will apparently get 500 Atoms from get go, if they pre-ordered the game. According to Pete Hines, Bethesda will "throw them at [players] all the time" hinting that the players will not need to grind 24/7 for cosmetics.
Then again, if they turn out to be easy to get, it would be pointless to have them as microtransactions so it would be wise to remain wary until we know exact accumulation rates as well as the price of this currency.
Whatever turns out to be the case with cosmetic purchases, it is good to know that the game will not suffer from pay to win elements. On the other hand, players that have seen the gameplay and even news outlets that got a hands-on don't seem to be thrilled with gameplay so far. Fortunately, mods that could possibly fix the game a bit should be coming at some point in the future.
