Fable may not launch in 2026 after all. The Fable delay news was first reported by XboxEra co-host Nick Shpeshal and points towards a delay once more as we continue to await the long-anticipated game.
“There’s going to be a 2027 release for this, I don’t have direct info on it, but a few people in my phone call circles at different companies that work with Xbox and Microsoft games told me the same thing, which is 2027,” he said.
The delay is not due to “running into a wall” or “development hell”, but more that the Playground Games' project is moving slower than anticipated.
Xbox Still Confident in Playground’s Progress
Microsoft officially delayed Fable from 2025 to 2026 in February 2025. At the time Craig Duncan, Head of Xbox Game Studios said that they “want to make sure the game is ready” and that he was “really, really supportive” of Playground Games’ vision for the game.
“We’ve just got the right amount of time, we think, to give the team the breathing space they need, make the best possible game, and take our time in doing that,” Duncan said. “It’s definitely worth the wait.”
The development is an ambitious one for Playground Games, as they are using the IP to craft an open-world action RPG experience. While the publisher has promised to deliver a top-notch game in 2026, the production schedule for such a large game could move in different directions, and another delay may not be surprising.
What It Means for Xbox’s 2026 Lineup
A further delay in the project would put Xbox in a position to lean more heavily on other first-party games in 2026 like Gears of War: E-Day. As of now, there has been no official comment on a 2027 delay from Microsoft or Playground Games.
Players will have to wait for more news on the project, hopefully with more gameplay and confirmation, at one of 2025’s remaining showcases.
