Joining the likes of id Software's John Carmack, Valve's Gabe Newell and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, our favorite jokesmith Tim Schafer has been named the recipient of this year's BAFTA Fellowship award.
British Academy of Film and Television Arts says the Fellowship award is the highest honour the institution can bestow. It is given to individuals "in recognition of outstanding achievement in the art forms of the moving image". No, you can't get it for drinking, thank you.
Schafer says he's "surprised, humbled and honoured" to be receiving the award. He thanked the Academy for its longstanding support of video games, but let's not kid ourselves here - there was very little, if any, support when Schafer was coming through. Heck, the "industry" was barely an industry.
Nevertheless, Schafer persisted in the most glorious of fashions, churning out classics such as Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, The Day of the Tentacle, Psychonauts, Curse of Monkey Island, Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: Le Cluck's Revenge, etc. Now, we're talking about my highlights here, the actual list of Schafer's games . Personally, I can't get myself to get excited over red-carpet going pretty people giving awards to my heroes. Moreover, lifetime achievement awards always make me think the guy's dying or something - seriously, can't you guys, like, wait a bit longer?
On the other hand, since we've grown up trying to untangle Schafer's ridiculous plots and hilarious jokes, we'll "take one for the team" and congratulate Mr. Schafer on the award, as well as his influence on both on the gaming industry and ourselves.
