Psychonauts 2 was quite incredible so one would assume that Double Fine could be working on a third game in the series at the moment, especially with the financial backing of Xbox, but sadly, that is not the case.
Double Fine are quite busy right now and have several projects in the works but Psychonauts 3 is not one of them. This has been officially confirmed by studio head Tim Schafer, who was pretty clear that will have to wait for quite a while for Raz's next adventure.
Speaking in an interview with Cressup, Schafer said: "I'm not working on Psychonauts 3" and added that Double Fine are not quite ready to show what they have been creating over the last couple of years but that could change in the near future.
"We’re kind of at the 'Willy Wonka, closed doors' phase. But soon we could open and cause a lot of harm to a lot of children, just like Willy Wonka."
Double Fine are known for creating very unique gaming experiences so it's safe to assume that these new project will be quite different too. It will be interesting to see the scope of these projects and whether the studio are looking to take that big step forward now that they are a first-party studio.
We've seen the studio's talent in Psychonauts 2 and what they can do with proper support. The team even revealed that Psychonauts 2 wouldn't have several features if it wasn't for the Microsoft acquisition so it's certainly great that the team now have a strong financial backing.
Double Fine are known for games like Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, Grim Fandango, Broken Age and more. Whatever their next project is, expect it to launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S and day one on Xbox Game Pass.
