The British Academy Awards for the best video games in 2022 included a few unexpected results. Unexpectedly, the top prize wasn't won by God of War Ragnarök or Elden Ring, as predicted, but rather by the total outsider Vampire Survivors.
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) hosted an award ceremony yesterday, and among the awards they gave, one was particularly interesting for us: the Game of the Year 2022 award. We know it's 2023, but this is the final 2022 gaming award coverage we'll provide, and we're only writing because the main prize was won by a complete outsider.
The British Academy Award for Game of the Year 2022 went to the PC and mobile game Vampire Survivors.
For those who are unfamiliar with the game, it is a very addictive 2D survival game in which you avoid opponents, collect crystals for upgrades, and unlock new weapons. The seemingly simple recipe conceals more depth than it appears at first, and the game's concept drew a large number of players on PC , where Vampire Survivors was one of the most played games in 2022.
Vampire Survivors also won Best Gameplay Design, despite not being the most dominant game of the night. The most awarded game at BAFTA was God of War: Ragnarök , which received six awards out of a total of fifteen nominations. Elden Ring , the winner of the most GOTY awards in 2022, received two.
