Dying Light 2 developer and publisher Techland announced today a partnership with Chinese company Tencent, who are currently in the process of becoming Techland's major shareholder. In the official statement, Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka said that the partnership will allow Techland to reach new heights and move full steam ahead in game production.
Luckily, Techland will retain ownership of their IP, maintain creative freedom and continue to operate the way they feel it's right. This looks like a hands-off approach from Tencent but it remains to be seen if that is indeed the case in the coming years.
Techland also said their open-world RPG is shaping up quite nicely which might be a slight hint that we'll see some footage of this new IP very soon.
Here's a statement from Techland CEO Pawel Marchewka regarding the new partnership:
"Today I am happy to announce the partnership with Tencent who are in the process of becoming Techland's majority shareholder.
Teaming up with Tencent will allow us to move full speed ahead with the execution of the vision for our games. We have chosen an ally who has already partnered with some of the world's finest video game companies and helped them reach new heights while respecting their ways of doing things.
We will retain full ownership of our IPs, maintain creative freedom, and continue to operate the way we believe is right. I'm also going to continue serving as the studio’s CEO."
In case you are not familiar with Techland, the studio are best known for the Dying Light franchise but they have also worked on Dead Island and Call of Juarez series. The studio is currently busy working on their next big project, which is a fantasy open-world RPG coming in the near future to PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
