SteamSpy has revealed the top 20 best earners on Steam for 2017. According to the service, they almost earned as much money as the rest of 21000 games on Steam. While not 100 per cent correct, these numbers are the best estimate up to date.
It was earlier that 2017 was the record year when it comes to Valve's profits, by making £3.04 billion ($4.3 billion USD) in revenue. This is in large part thanks to their best earners, with top 100 earning half of that revenue. In other words, 0.5 per cent of the best sold games earned as much as the rest of 21000+ games on Steam combined.
Sergey Galyonkin's SteamSpy has also estimated the platform's top 20 best earners. SteamSpy is a servers that automatically gathers data from around 800.000 user profiles at a time and estimates Steam's numbers. While not entirely accurate, it is the best estimation available up to date.
As we noted yesterday, PUBG is leading the list miles ahead of everyone with an estimated 27.8 million copies sold in 2017. This amounted to £424,4 ($600) million revenue for the publisher and considering Steam takes a 30 per cent cut from sales, PUBG's total revenue was along the lines of £636,7 ($900) million. Steam's cut was £212,2 ($300) million.
Counter Strike: Global Offensive is sitting in second place at £84,9 ($120) million. This may be a huge difference but PUBG is a relatively new game in a booming genre while Counter Strike: Global Offensive is about six years old at this point. Third place is also occupied by a veteran as GTA V is about five years old. The full list is as follows:
1: PUBG - $600M
2: CS:GO - $120M
3: Grand Theft Auto V - $83M
4: Call of Duty:World War II - $41M
5: Civilization VI - $39M
6: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - $38M
7: Divinity: Original Sin 2 - $37M
8: Ghost Recon Wildands - $33M
9: Total War: Warhammer II - $32M
10: Middle-Earth: Shadow of War - $31M
11: Rainbow 6: Siege - $30M
12: NieR: Automata - $29M
13: ARK: Survival Evolved - $28M
14: For Honor - $26M
15: Assassin's Creed: Origins - $25M
16: Resident Evil 7 - $24M
17: Dark Souls III - $24M
18: Rocket League $23M
19: Football Manager 2018 - $23M
20: Cuphead - $22M
Considering that SteamSpy doesn't take microtransactions and DLC in account, the numbers are actually way higher for all of the games mentioned on the list as well as Steam's total revenue.
