It's kinda crazy to think that we haven't heard anything about State of Decay 3 ever since the game was announced way back in July 2020. That's almost four years of radio silence from Undead Labs and Xbox and would explain the rumours that the developer didn't even know what the game would be when they announced it.
But in those four years, Undead Labs have been working hard on their next big zombie survival adventure and could finally show us the fruits of their labour at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase 2024.
At least that's what reliable Xbox insider Jez Corden suggests in his predictions piece for Microsoft's big gaming event. Corden revealed a couple of very interesting details about State of Decay 3 which will certainly make the fans of this series quite happy.
He states that State of Decay 3 looks "far more impressive" than its predecessor State of Decay 2 and has a strong "visual presentation" as one of its core development pillars. Gears of War developer The Coalition, who are known Unreal Engine 5 experts, have apparently helped Undead Labs to push the visual fidelity to the next level.
Another thing that Undead Labs wanted to improve according to Corden is the story. State of Decay 3 will "lean heavily into narrative elements" to make players feel immersed in the game's open world.
To achieve this, the game will try to intertwine "individual community members backstories more viscerally into gameplay" so when players lose their favourite community member it should feel like a proper gut punch, says Corden.
While all of this sounds incredibly exciting and makes us very stoked to see the actual game, it's worth mentioning that you should take everything with a grain of salt, until we get the official trailer and information from Xbox.
That being said, Jez has been a very reliable source for all things Xbox for a long, long time so I have no reason not to trust him.
State of Decay 3 is launching on PC and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The game will also release day one on Game Pass but it does not have a release date at the moment.
