Ever since Microsoft officially unveiled plans to release some of their exclusive games on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, gamers started to wonder whether this is just a one-time thing or the start of a fully multiplatform shift that will only pick up the pace in the coming months and years.
Reliable Xbox sources repeatedly stated that Microsoft discussed bringing all of their games to PlayStation 5, including iconic Xbox titles like Gears of War and Halo. Xbox's exclusives strategy for Bethesda games also seems to switching to multiplatform as rumblings about Indiana Jones and Starfield launching on PlayStation 5 simply won't go away.
Another massive Bethesda release is the next Doom title, which is set to be announced at the upcoming Xbox Games Showcase according to trustworthy Tom Warren of The Verge. And this one too will probably come to PlayStation 5.
When asked on social media X about the chances of the next Doom game releasing on Sony's platform, Windows Central's Jez Corden replied that chances are indeed high for Id Software's brutal shooter to appear on all platforms.
This probably won't come as a surprise given the recent events at Microsoft. One thing that I'm eager to see is whether the next Doom arrives on PlayStation 5 on day one or a bit later after the Xbox release.
Timed exclusivity for first-party games would not be a good look for Xbox so I doubt they will do that and full exclusivity seems to be out of the question. If I had to guess, I'd say that the next Doom will probably be a simultaneous release across all platforms.
The reaction to such an announcement would certainly be interesting as Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer was pretty adamant that the Bethesda acquisition was about delivering great exclusive games for Xbox players.
But it would not be the first time that Xbox executives changed their minds. Remember Matt Booty's promise that Arkane would stay open? That one aged like milk.
