X user Dior dropped a bombshell that Microsoft are preparing an offer of $16 billion in cash to buy Valve including their assets and IP.

Microsoft are preparing to offer $16 million in cash to buy Valve, according to X user Dior. Now, before you enter full panic mode and start worrying for your beloved Steam, it's worth mentioning that the leaker spreading the rumour is not really known to be reliable within the gaming industry.

I personally have never even heard about the leaker until today when the X post started doing rounds over the internet. So, yeah, it's very unlikely that Microsoft would try to buy Valve but crazier things have happened. I would never bet on Microsoft buying Activision and Bethesda either but here we are.

If and that's a big if, Microsoft were to try and buy Valve, regulators' alarm bells would ring louder than Gabe Newell's phone at this very moment. Microsoft barely completed the acquisition of Activision Blizzard after a year-long fight with regulators in the UK and US so there's little to no chance that a vertical merger like the potential Steam one would pass.

Basically, that would mean that Microsoft would be close to having a monopoly on the PC storefront with Steam, Xbox app and Battle net under their umbrella and no regulator would allow that.

Also, the rumoured $16 billion in cash seems way too low for the company of Valve's size which makes more money than it can count. Just think about it, Steam revenue is massive and the brand power of Valve is probably second to none within the industry.

Counter-Strike 2 on Xbox consoles? Surely not

So all in all, If you're a fan of Valve and Steam and don't want any other corporation getting their hands on your beloved storefront, worry not, as this rumour will probably be evaporate into thin air.
