Bethesda has confirmed that Starfield's first expansion, entitled Shattered Space, will be based on one hand-crafted planet; wholely different from the main game itself, which was designed with a thousand procedurally generated planets in mind.
The storyline of the expansion is said to be wholly carried out on this unique world design, where jumping between the systems would not be necessary for the players. While leaving the planet will be possible, the focus of the narrative and key events will take place there.
The Va'ruun faction is from a planet in Shattered Space, and unlike the procedurally generated world designs that permeate Starfield's core game, this world will be intricately designed with lots of care.
In the process, an overall more engaging and focused setting is realized, which becomes one of the stronger selling points for the expansion. The story follows an experiment in space that went horribly wrong and created a vortex.
An important leader of the Va'ruun faction has gone missing, and chaos has been caused by the factions fighting over who will be installed as their new ruler.
Players will be challenged to work their way through these inner fights and make key decisions that determine the future of the planet and all its species.
Slated to come out at the end of this month, Shattered Space claims an experience much more intimate than the sprawling, open-ended exploration in the base game.
Shaping up to be quite an exciting new chapter, this expansion is for those players wanting more focused storytelling and to get deeper into Starfield's lore. Starfield: Shattered Space will be available for PC and Xbox Series X/S on September 30, 2024.
