GSC Game World say Xbox Series S can hit 60 FPS in many cases but for launch, they opted to only offer 30 FPS, with the possibility of adding 60 FPS mode at a later date.

Stalker 2 developer GSC Game World have provided an update on the performance of their long-awaited survival shooter on Microsoft's consoles Xbox Series X and Series S.

The devs were pretty honest about it, stating that the bigger and more powerful Series X will run Stalker 2 at 60 FPS with some drops to 55 FPS, while X's little brother Series S will only offer 30 FPS mode at launch with the possibility of adding 60 FPS in post-launch updates.

"On the Xbox Series S, we stick to 30 FPS. However, in many cases, we have managed to hit 60 FPS, but it's not as consistent as the Series X. But we're looking to get a performance mode for Xbox Series S, to get it to 60 FPS. We think it's possible," GSC Game World told WindowsCentral.

GSC Game World revealed that they initially thought it would be impossible to develop Stalker 2 for Series S due to the consoles' serious memory limitations which turned out to be quite a stumbling block for many devs, including Larian and their Baldur's Gate 3.

However, once GSC started working on the console ports, they discovered that the hardware in Series S wasn't so bad and that it was possible to optimise for the console to deliver great performance, despite the weaker hardware.

The devs did point out that not every studio has the time and resources for such optimisation, which could be one of the reasons why we've seen scenarios in which Series S is seriously lagging behind its bigger brother and PlayStation 5.

Stalker 2 certainly looks incredible and it's great to hear that it will also have solid performance on Xbox consoles

All in all, it's certainly great to hear insights into the development of Stalker 2 for the consoles and how the dev team managed to overcome some of the challenges they've encountered.

Stalker 2 is coming to PC and Xbox Series X|S consoles on November 20, 2024. It will be available day one on Xbox Game Pass.
