Ever since the first PlayStation hit the shelves, Sony's was a platform walled off from the rest, which eventually grew to entail exclusives, but the latest news on them blocking Destiny 2 character transfers is one bitter reminder.

Yes, a reminder of how far companies are willing to go to keep you tied to their platform, even if it means preventing you from continuing your gaming experience elsewhere.

Speaking in a podcast, Kotaku's Jason Schreier mentioned that Bungie were interested in allowing for cross-platform saves in Destiny 2, but that Sony would have none of that.

"Sony was just like, 'we want people to associate Destiny with PS4', even if that means screwing over other players. Yeah, it sucks and hopefully Bungie ends it", he said.

Having been planned as the great successor to the great console exclusive, Destiny 2 brought the franchise to PCs as well, something Sony couldn't stop.

What they could do, however, was to make it expensive to switch platforms, and while such a move makes sense from a business standpoint, we're not sure the history of gaming will view it as kindly.

To make matters worse, this tactic recently backfired, as Bungie were forced to block the Wavesplitter , a one year PS4 exclusive weapon that somehow found its way to PC and Xbox One players. They get to keep it, but it won't be usable until the Sony exclusivity is over.

Schreier also pointed out an important distinction between Sony's and Epic Games' exclusivity, pointing out that while he's not a fan of strategies that rely on exclusivity, PC players still have a free choice that's a few clicks away.

"I still don't understand why people are so mad but whatever. Let's say you like Steam. You don't want your games off of Steam because of all the features that Steam provides, and maybe you don't even trust Epic with your personal data, whatever it is", he said, "All you need to do to get that game in the same exact way is just download an extra launcher."
