Slightly Mad Studios are developing a new console that's aiming for 4K 60 FPS gaming and VR, as has been confirmed by the company's CEO Ian Bell. Dubbed the Mad Box, the console will have a free engine for developers and high-end hardware.

It looks like Sony and Microsoft will have another competitor in three years time as Slightly Mad Studios are ramping up the plans for their Mad Box console. According to the company's CEO Ian Bell, it will be "the most powerful console ever created".

Mad Box will supposedly offer gaming at 4K resolution in 60 FPS which is something that current generation of consoles are struggling with. Along with that, Bell also confirmed full support for VR and the majority of today's VR headsets, including some that are yet to come.

Console specs will be equivalent with a "very fast PC 2 years from now" but since Slightly Mad Studios mentioned they're currently in talks with component manufacturers, everything is still in infant stages. According to Bell, initial designs are specced out in detail though, which suggests that the studio haven't really decided on this move out of the blue.

Slightly Mad Studios' CEO also confirmed that they will offer a completely free engine for game developers to work with and that everyone is welcome to release their games on Mad Box.

In his interview to Variety, Bell said that Slightly Mad Studios already have multiple interested parties for crowdfunding and partnerships. “We have multiple investors already offering the required funding for us to see the product to completion, but it’s still early days and we’re looking at the best offers right now,” Bell explained.

As for the price, Mad Box will be competitive with upcoming console prices and the company will not look to take large cuts as other console owners which will allow them to offer their console at lower prices.

The first early design photos of a new console should be revealed in four to six weeks time. Bell didn't say anything about the upcoming Project Cars 3 game which could potentially become the first game on Mad Box, but it's safe to assume that studio could use their biggest title to promote the new console.
