Sea of Thieves is a massive hit on PlayStation 5 to no one's surprise. The swashbuckling live service title that sailed on Xbox consoles and PCs since its release in 2018 has finally anchored to PlayStation 5 on April 30, 2024, and is already the best-selling game in the European region.
Rare's pirate simulator skyrocketed to No.1 on Sony's official list leaving behind major hits like GTA 5 and looter shooter Helldivers 2. This is certainly a massive achievement for the game and a proof that Rare and Xbox knew what they were doing when they announced that one of their biggest exclusives is coming to PlayStation 5.
Sea of Thieves also had a very successful launch in the US and Canada. Sony's listing shows that the game was third on the list of most downloaded games, just behind Helldivers 2 and the recently released action-adventure Stellar Blade.
It's also worth noting that most of these downloads will be pre-orders, as Sea of Thieves released on the last day of April so we expect another strong performance for the month of May.
Here are the top ten most downloaded games on PlayStation in April 2024:
US/Canada
- HELLDIVERS 2
- Stellar Blade
- Sea of Thieves
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
- MLB The Show 24
- Grand Theft Auto V
- NBA 2K24
- WWE 2K24
- Grounded
- Dragon's Dogma 2
Europe
- Sea of Thieves
- Grand Theft Auto V
- HELLDIVERS 2
- Stellar Blade
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
- EA SPORTS FC 24
- TopSpin 2K25
- Grounded
- It Takes Two
- Fallout 4
As you can see from the lists, Grounded was another Xbox game that managed to enter the top ten most downloaded games in April 2024. Grounded released on PlayStation 5 on April 16, 2024, and it's safe to say that this tiny survival title already found success on Sony's platform.
It will be interesting to see if this success opens the door for more Xbox exclusives on PlayStation 5, which does seem to be Microsoft's long-term goal.
Microsoft found themselves under the spotlight this week when the company announced the closure of four Bethesda studios including Tango Gameworks, the developer of another Xbox title that was recently ported to PlayStation 5.
