Sea of Thieves seems to have launched fairly well for Microsoft on PS5. According to a Windows Central report, more than a million copies of the multiplayer title have been sold off on the PlayStation 5 since it went live in April.
Although Microsoft hasn't confirmed these sales figures, the numbers do indicate that the game has seen warm reception from players on PlayStation.
In its launch month on PS5, Sea of Thieves sailed to the top of Europe's download charts, while it placed third on the US and Canada charts - only to further climb to the top in the following month.
Prior to PlayStation's launch, Rare announced that Sea of Thieves had hit 40 million players across all platforms since first launching. However, a revised toll for the number of players following the release on PS5 has yet to be shared.
Sea of Thieves joins only a few other Xbox titles making the jump to those other platforms, too, such as Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, and Grounded. Performance since its launch on PS5 has clearly shown that it still commands a lot of appeal and great demand for its oddball multiplayer.
The success story of Sea of Thieves on the PS5 is not solely a win for Rare or Microsoft but contains within it a bigger message related to collaborative approaches in the gaming industry, specifically with respect to how collaboration in gaming works better, is more flexible, and cross-platform, hence significantly improving game access and enjoyment for the broad audience.
This will be quite interesting to observe as this trend pushes forward into how strategic decisions are going to swing at other game developers and their publishers.
