Starfield could be set to launch on PlayStation 5 later this year according to the latest report from XboxEra. Bethesda's sci-fi RPG will reportedly arrive to Sony's platform along with the highly-anticipated Shattered Space expansion.
If true, this would certainly be massive news, signalling a major shift in Xbox's strategy moving forward. Microsoft Gaming boss Phil Spencer and other Xbox executives were pretty adamant that Starfield and other Bethesda games will be available only where Game Pass exists but it seems that is not the case anymore.
In addition, XboxEra's Nick Baker reveals that Starfield is not the only big game that will be coming to PlayStation 5. Ninja Theory's action adventure Hellblade 2 is also poised to launch on the competitor's console. Starfield and Hellblade 2 join the list of already rumoured titles like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves.
The reports state that Xbox will start announcing these ports soon but before that, they will make a statement to their community regarding the change in strategy. Apparently, such a statement is expected to come later this month.
Xbox fans on social media are expectedly disappointed by the news and have been asking for a comment from Phil Spencer, Matt Booty and other Xbox executives. Many of them point out that such a strategy would signal the death of the Xbox console as players would not have any reason to buy one over PlayStation.
They are also calling out Xbox for not being honest in their communication over the last couple of years, namely when it comes to the exclusivity of the Bethesda games.
One thing that you need to keep in mind if you're an Xbox fan is that none of this is officially confirmed. Yes, the reports come from very reliable sources but until this is confirmed by the company, it's just a rumour, albeit a very strong one.
Another thing to consider is the fact that Microsoft and Xbox made some terrible decisions in the past but reversed them after seeing the uproar from the community.
It's highly likely that the details about Starfield and other games becoming multiplatform are being leaked internally from some disgruntled Xbox employees, who are not pleased with this new strategy. Time will tell.
