Companion mechanics quickly became the bread and butter of almost every Obsidian game, and The Outer Worlds 2 isn't an exception; on the contrary, the companions in this game gained a whole new level with dedicated storylines and special upgrades tied to their progressions.
There are six companions in The Outer Worlds 2, and none of them are technically missable; however, you can mess up some dialogue choices and prevent them from joining you, but if you follow a simple logic, you'll quickly recruit all of them and will be able to use all the benefits playing alongside them brings.
The List of All Companions in The Outer Worlds
1. Niles
Niles is the first companion you'll be able to enlist, and unlike the others (except for Valerie), he will be automatically unlocked as soon as you wake up from a ten-year-long slumber. Niles belongs to the same organisation you're in, the Earth Directorate, and after being betrayed by his fellow comrade, vengeance is his main motivation.
2. Valerie
The unit (read: robot) V.A.L.E.R.I.E. is the next companion you'll get from the beginning of the game. She is, just like Niles, automatically added because she was Niles' faithful companion in search of you while you were hibernating after the accident at the beginning of the game.
She is a handy companion and the first one that can be upgraded fully. She is also very funny, and her comments on the situations you'll stumble upon are pure gold. I cannot recommend her more to stick with you as much as possible.
3. Inez
Inez is the first companion you'll be able to recruit, and she is pretty much unmissable. You'll come across her very early in the game during one of the main missions inside the Ministry of Accuracy. All you need to do is speak to her, do a couple of side quests for her, including the one where you must convince her to give up her old job, and once she suggests it, accept her as a companion.
Send either Niles or Valerie home if they are with you, and continue with Inez. You'll be able to tackle some side missions with her, but her first companion mission will commence quite later, once you make your way to Auntie's Choice main ship.
4. Marisol
Marisol is found on the second planet called Dorado, inside Golden Ridge. You'll encounter her during the main mission called "The Beginning of the Endpoint", so she is unmissable too. Like with Inez, you'll have to accept her as a companion and do a couple of side missions for her, but after that, she will be available in your companion roster.
5. Aza
She is found in Golden Ridge, too, specifically inside a place called the Decommissioned Autonomous Extractorium. Once you enter the building, you'll have to kill the cultist inside and free her from the upper floor. She will immediately join you if you accept her as a companion, even though some of your companions might object due to her blood thirst.
6. Tristan
Tristan is a Protectorate agent, and he will be available inside the bar called The 2ND Choice inside Free Market Station. Once you engage with him, he will be in some sort of dispute with a bartender, and if you speak with them, you'll unlock a side mission you will be able to follow afterwards.
After doing a couple of side quests together, Tristan will become available for choosing.
If you're having trouble pinpointing any of the companions in the world, you should keep in mind that they have a specific speech bubble icon next to them if they are available, and this icon can be registered from quite afar. Also, this icon will float above companions' heads once their specific missions are available or they have something to say to you.
