Yet another of the highly-anticipated Xbox games has now made it to the list of those titles that are not going to allow 60 FPS gameplay on the next-gen Xbox Series X/S.
The next action RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, Avowed, joins in with Redfall, Starfield, and Forza Motorsport to be capped at 30 FPS on console hardware.
Art director Matt Hansen described the reason for this decision in his recent appearance on the Iron Lords podcast.
According to Hansen, the reason for targeting 30 FPS was rather sorted out early in development as the best fitting for a single-player first-person game. "You don't necessarily need 60 frames for this type of game," he said according to VGC.
Said choice, he believes, will enable them to pump and bump up visual effects and lighting, among others, and other graphical elements to create a rich and immersive world.
Hansen also emphasized how the game runs lithely, especially considering the visual complexity. For this reason, they decided to remain at 30 FPS rather than drop the overall visual fidelity or atmosphere of their title. "We're really happy with how it's turning out," he said, mentioning how some decisions must be made for the level of visual quality desired.
Although Microsoft has certainly been touting the Xbox Series X/S as capable of delivering 60 FPS gameplay, it's undeniable that players will get upset when first-party titles like Avowed can't reach this benchmark at launch.
There is certainly doubt that Obsidian will eventually increase the FPS to 60 in some future update. The fans shall wait until then for the possible evolution post-launch of the game to give them what was highly expected: higher frame rates.
