Ed Boon has finally spilled the beans - Mortal Kombat 11 is officially announced and it is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on 23 April 2019. Pre-orders are already available, but carry an ominous message with them.

Everyone loves NetherRealm Studios for putting high-quality storytelling into fighting games, and they seem to be ready to deliver once again. The trailer above depicts an odd fight between what appeared to be two Scorpions and two Raidens, ending with a mysterious reveal of a being that may control time, which would explain the earlier confusion.

The trailer starts with Scorpion apparently killing Raiden, only for the latter to reappear seconds later and proceed to brutalize the not-always-demonic ninja. One he fell, a new Scorpion, in a classic outfit, appeared in a similar manner that the second Raiden did and proceeded to kill his opponent.

These sequences hinted at several things - there will be a complex story once again, customisation will be extensive, which the developers confirmed already and the story may pit former friends back into a rivalry setting.

According to the description on the trailer, the game will feature a new graphics engine for even more fidelity in the gore department. Now it just seems like a Punch-Bethesda season, as in one single night NetherRealm Studios announced they would use a new engine to upgrade the graphics and Obsidian with the "creators of the original Fallout" message.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are some bad news. Mortal Kombat 11 is up for pre-ordering now and unfortunately has a bonus character. It is a practice NetherRealm pulled before with Darkseid in Injustice 2, and apparently didn't kick the habit.

While it's a great incentive for better early sales, it is still a low blow for any players who pay the same amount of money, but don't do it before the game's release. Paywalling a playable character is not a good practice, unfortunately employed by many fighting games, but pre-order-walling is even worse.
