NetherRealm explained how exactly they plan to implement custom variations in Mortal Kombat 11 ranked play. The developer said that each character will have at least two pre-built variations and that most customisations will be scaled back.

Mortal Kombat 11 will offer more variations and richer character customisation than its predecessors and the developer NetherRealm already detailed these improvements shortly after the game's reveal. The devs promise numerous combinations and possibilities to create your own and unique combat variations with moves that suit you the best.

While these customisations will be available in single player mode, local multiplayer and casual online play, NetherRealm plan to scale them back in competitive modes. NetherRealm said that each character will have at least two, pre-built variations for use at tournaments and in online ranked play but they did not confirm the final number of variations.

With so many options to create unique custom variations, NetherRealm think it would be impossible to balance matches and give everyone equal odds in competitive modes. Of course, many players are already unhappy with the decision and are voicing their concerns. They fear that the custom variations system is only designed for casual players and that those who play competitively will miss out on some cool moves that may be missing in pre-built variations.

However, NetherRealm say that they will listen to community feedback and will adjust pre-built variations by adding or removing certain moves or changing their slot requirements. They also said that variations may rotate from time to time, giving players more options to explore all of them.

All in all, we'll have to wait just a couple more weeks before we find out just how rich is Mortal Kombat 11's character customisation and how much it can affect the gameplay. As you may know, Mortal Kombat 11 is launching on PC, Play Station 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on 23 April 2019.
