Riot Games' biggest tournament of the year kicked off in high fashion with an incredibly exciting Play-In Stage where we saw turnarounds, unexpected results and a reverse sweep.
League of Legends' main tournament hasn't been this unpredictable in a long while and it still probably won't be due to the massive gap between LCK and LPL on one side and everyone else on the other.
Without further ado, let's get into the spoiler territory.
Qualifying Match 1 - TW vs GAM
Team Whales came in strong through the upper bracket after winning their first two games but they couldn't get past their region's first seed. GAM are often called "TSM of VCS" as they are sort of a gatekeeper team that is incredibly good at beating other VCS rosters but don't get much further than that.
It was true this time around as well, after Team Whales kept making questionable plays that led to lost games, pointing to a mental block against Gigabyte Marines who will appear in the Main Event after their 3-1 win.
Qualifying Match 2 - PSG vs BDS
PSG won their first two matches handily, not dropping a single game in the process while BDS had a shaky run thus far. It began well for the Taiwanese team as they built up a 2-0 lead here as well but then Adam got to play the picks he loves.
Starting with Olaf in the third game, BDS turned on the style and won a tough match to secure their first win in the series. Then the inevitable happened - Adam got to pick his Garen and proceeded to dominate the match. Going up against a Jax that could win the game on his own if he got to his endgame build, Adam wouldn't let him breathe for the entirety of the laning phase, which allowed the rest of BDS to play their own game and tehy managed to equalise.
What followed next was a gruelling battle between the two sides for that last spot at Worlds 2023 Main Event. BDS went with two marksmen which was risky up until the endgame but at 40 minutes, it took just one teamfight to wipe PSG and win it in a reverse sweep, securing a spot for the fourth European team at the Main Event.
