EA announced that five Need for Speed games would no longer be on sale and their online components would be disabled.

Need for Speed has numerous games in the series but some are not as popular as others. Some, on the other hand, are just getting beaten by time itself and both of these groups are losing support as the result. This includes both support for online features like multiplayer and for some reason, the potential players' ability to purchase them.

The NFS games that will be no longer sold as of May 31, 2021, are:

  • Need for Speed Carbon
  • Need for Speed Undercover
  • Need for Speed Shift
  • Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed
  • Need for Speed: The Run

While the games will be removed from digital storefronts immediately, the  online features will persist for a few months. Online services will be officially retired on September 1.

Those who already purchased any of these five games will still be able to download and play them, it's just that hypothetical new players will no longer be able to obtain the license.

It remains to be seen whether these games will be preserved in some form and whether third parties will be able to utilise legal loopholes to make the games available from alternative sources.
