League of Legends Patch 26.1 is here and it’s the true start of 2026. The latest update is one of the biggest of recent years, overhauling the game’s core gameplay, ranked progression, strategic focus, and even Summoner’s Rift’s visual identity for the new Demacia season.
Expect new systems, new incentives to play your role, major changes to objectives, and broad tuning across champions and the fundamentals of combat.
Patch 26.1 launched on Jan. 7–8, 2026 and marks the beginning of Season One, which also comes with a new take on how games develop. Riot has been moving League in a more strategic direction, where smart macro decisions, lane pressure, coordinated team play, and role knowledge are rewarded more than snowballing or chaotic objective trading.
Major New Systems – Role Quests
Role Quests are the patch 26.1 headline system. Every role now has their own quest track they progress through by doing role-specific actions: this includes efficient farming, taking objectives, supporting allies, and more team-fighting.
Completing these quests can give gameplay benefits such as XP and Gold bonuses, shields, better boots, and improved late-game scaling. The support and Jungle quests have been overhauled, and Top, Mid, and Bot receive all-new paths for these incentives.
Demacia Takes Over the Rift
Summoner’s Rift now has a number of new Demacia-inspired visual assets, featuring the faction’s signature white stone, gold trim, and heroic design elements. The in-game store now also features a collection of For Demacia-themed cosmetics including Prestige Veiled Lady Morgana, Petricite Cho’Gath, Petricite Nautilus, and Durand’s Legacy Taliyah.
Gameplay and Objective Shifts
The new patch is a big strategic pivot back towards turret pressure and map control, facilitated by new mechanics like Crystalline Overgrowth and new tuning on the epic objectives like Baron Nashor and Dragons which all have improved resistances and rewards to make contests more meaningful.
Riot has also removed several preseason mechanics like Atakhan, Feats of Strength, and Blood Roses to clean up gameplay pacing.
Champions, Combat, and Ranked
Critical strike damage is now set to 200% across the board, a change that will have a wide-reaching impact on crit builds and late-game carry potential. Multiple other champions have received specific adjustments in order to help them fit into the new patch.
Ranked has also seen several changes to the new season, to help make autofill less frustrating and matchmaking more accurate.
