After more than a decade of waiting, we are finally getting our first official look at the Grand Theft Auto 6 next month. The trailer, which was confirmed by Rockstar Games a week ago, should give us a release window confirmation along with the launch platforms - PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and hopefully PC.
Traditionally, Rockstar Games never release their game simultaneously across all platforms. The studio mainly focuses on the consoles with the PC launch coming a year later.
Will that be the case with Grand Theft Auto 6? At the moment, we do not know. Only Rockstar have the answer to that question and they will probably reveal it in the trailer. However, lets take a look at the possibility of both scenarios and why it's likely and unlikely that GTA 6 releases on PC on the same day as consoles.
Why GTA 6 may not launch on PC until later
If we look at Rockstar's previous major releases like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5, the answer is obvious - GTA 6 will come to PC after a year or so.
Another reason why it's unlikely that GTA 6 launches on PC at the same time as consoles is the scope of the game. It's safe to say that this will be one of the most ambitious games of all time.
Rockstar's titles are usually massive with stunning visuals, reactive open worlds and incredible stories. Developing and optimising such extraordinary games takes time. For example, Red Dead Redemption 2 was in development for eight years. We certainly would not be surprised if GTA 6's development cycle is longer than that.
Focusing on launching PS5 and Xbox Series X/S first and then spending an extra year or two polishing the PC version does indeed sound more likely than delaying the release on all platforms for an extra year or two, just to have a simultaneous release.
Why GTA 6 could launch day one on PC
And while our gut feeling tells us that PC release will come later, there are plenty of reasons why Rockstar may release the game on PC on launch day. The first one is the success of GTA Online.
Rockstar are still earning millions of dollars from the sales of notorious Shark Cards and even the sales of the actual game are strong thanks to new content in GTA Online.
The money could certainly make Rockstar's parent company Take Two reconsider the approach and ask the developers to have all versions of the game ready for shipping on the same date.
Another reason is the revenue from the actual sales of the game. It's safe to assume that the PC version of GTA 6 would probably be the best-selling one, just like Red Dead Redemption 2.
Hopefully, we'll get some confirmation on this when Rockstar finally release the trailer next month so all the speculation and discussion online about the PC release can end.
