In case that wasn't quite obvious by now, Helldivers 2 is a massive success both critically and commercially, which is perhaps more important for Arrowhead's future. The publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment announced in their earnings report that the co-op shooter sold over 12 million units as of May 5, 2024, which is a monumental success for the game.
What's even more impressive is the fact that Helldivers 2 beat the record set by Santa Monica Studio's God of War Ragnarok, which was released in 2022. In the same period of 12 weeks after the launch, Helldivers 2 sold more than the blockbuster action adventure.
Furthermore, the decision to launch the game day one on PC also turned out to be the right call since Helldivers 2 is officially Sony's biggest PC release of all time. Recently, it's been revealed that Helldivers 2 sold more copies on PC than on PlayStation 5 but Sony did not officially confirm those details in their earnings report.
Helldivers 2 launched on February 8, 2024, and it's still going strong on Steam with 24-hour peaks of around 100k players, despite a rocky launch that was plagued with issues.
Arrowhead are expected to release many content updates for the game in the near future, making this one of the most important live service titles for Sony in the coming years.
Sony are expected to release more live-service titles in the coming years, starting with Firewalk Studios' Concord, which is arriving later in 2024.
