Fable took center stage during Xbox Developer Direct as Playground Games gave players a ton of new info on its highly anticipated revival of the beloved RPG franchise.
During the Direct, Playground Games confirmed what we already knew: that this is a reboot of the Fable franchise, standing firmly on the franchise's key tenets of player choice, consequence, British humour, and an evolving world that responds to your actions.
Once again taking place in the world of Albion, you'll create the first hero to arrive in town in a generation. Starting out as a child, you'll discover heroic abilities as you grow, until one day your family is mysteriously turned to stone. From there, you'll venture out into the open world to make choices that will shape who you become.
A living Albion shaped by player choice
Another thing Xbox Developer Direct confirmed was how much players will be able to interact with the world around them. Players can purchase land and businesses, acquire wealth, marry NPCs, sire children, and completely influence vast estates throughout Albion.
Your choices carry consequences that alter the world around you and determine how it reacts to you moving forward.
Fable will have a morality system
There is a morality system at work. NPCs remember what you do to them, will act different when interacting with you based on your previous encounters with them, and will alter their own behaviour based on your reputation.
Developers stated there are over a thousand unique NPCs that populate Albion; all with their own schedules, personalities, hobbies, and goals. Every single NPC is voiced to give life to your actions and help sell the idea that Albion lives on with or without you there.
During one scenario developers showed, there was an NPC named Dave. Dave is an egotistical gardener who becomes a giant when he discovers magic.
Players have the ability to kill Dave and leave his body around for the world to see, or choose not to kill him and deal with the consequences of that decision for years to come.
Combat, customisation and returning locations
Combat makes use of melee, ranged and magic skills that you can chain depending on your style of play. Extensive customisation options are featured so you can craft your hero exactly how you want them, encouraging player expression and creating multiple different heroes that look different from one another.
Players will be excited to know that Bowerstone is back as is many new locations that fans of the series will recognize. Old foes are returning too, though there will be new enemies exclusive to this incarnation of Albion.
Release window and platforms
Showcased during Xbox Developer Direct, Fable is coming Autumn this year to Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5. To date, we haven’t received an actual release date or information on any editions of the game.
