Epic Games the studio behind the popular shooter Fortnite have allegedly become the victim of a massive ransomware attack. The attackers are a Russian ransomware group named Mogilevich, who claim that they have stolen close to 200 GB of data, including the source code and other crucial data including the personal information of Epic's employees and players.
The ransomware group announced on their Darknet Leak Site that they are selling the stolen data at 15000$ and there's a chance that we might see some of these confidential documents released onto the internet including players' personal contact info, banking details and more.
What do we know about Mogilevich?
Mogilevich is a newcomer criminal group in the world of ransomware. Epic Games is their 4th target with Nissan subsidiary Infiniti USA being the first one on 20 February this year.
They speak Russian and are addressing themselves as a Ransomware-for-hire kind of operation.
A spokesperson from Mogilevich stated: “We have quietly carried out an attack to [sic] Epic Games’ servers,”
How did Epic Games React?
The team at Epic Games was unaware of this incident at first. When asked about the entire ordeal, a spokesperson from Epic Games said: "Mogilievich has not contacted Epic or provided any proof of the veracity of these allegations."
"When we saw these allegations, which were a screenshot of a dark web webpage in a Tweet from a third party, we began investigating within minutes and reached out to Mogilevich for proof."
The team at Epic Games played it safe by not giving in to the demands of Mogilevich willy-nilly. Cyber attacks against video game companies are not as uncommon but there is a chance that this particular case could be a bluff altogether since Mogilevich has not contacted or has made attempts to contact Epic Games in any way. Nor have they shown any evidence of possessing what they claimed to have stolen from Epic Games.
As of now whether this hack was legit or not remains to be seen. In the meantime, as a precaution, you should enable 2-factor authentication on all your gaming websites as these sorts of attacks are becoming more frequent.
