The hugely popular MMO Overwatch 2 was under a DDOS attack recently. Even though Blizzard claims to have everything under control, players seem to think otherwise.

According to Blizzard's Customer Support profile on social media X, Overwatch 2 was recently under a strong DDOS attack.

Overwatch 2 players are currently playing on Season 9 which brought massive changes to the overall meta including a new rank tier. While players are still getting used to the changes made in season 9, Blizzard already started to tease elements from Season 10 that got the entire Overwatch 2 community super hyped.

However, in a recent tweet, they announced that Overwatch 2 was experiencing a DDOS attack that was preventing the players from playing the game. This is not the first time Blizzard fell victim to a DDOS attack they were hit with a similar attack last year as well.

What is a DDOS attack? How does it affect games?

DDOS or direct denial of service is a form of cyber attack where hackers target and attack a website or service and overload the servers with so many requests that the servers shut down or start to malfunction.

This means:

  • Connectivity issues for players
  • Players not being able to log into the game
  • The sudden end to all current games during the attack
  • Loss of progress
  • Breach of personal data and privacy

Some players even reported that their accounts got banned and suspended as they fell victim to the DDOS attack, while others complained that they got de-ranked.

Has the issue been resolved?

Even though Blizzard quickly responded to the attack and posted that they resolved the issue, players continue to report connectivity issues. They are still complaining and reporting issues even multiple hours after Blizzard's post claiming that the issues have been resolved.

While Blizzard will quickly and eventually recover from the DDOS attack, what lies ahead for them is questionable as the latest DDOS attack may have severe effects on their team as well as the fans going forward.
