Dark Souls series has been the dream of every gamer who wanted to challenge themselves in a dark medieval fantasy for a long time now and those who didn't get the opportunity to enjoy everything From Software had to offer might want to jump on the current sales train.
All the games in the trilogy are now 50 per cent off on Steam and while the ideal scenario is to get them all, you may want to get just one or two of them so here is a few tips on making your choice.
As you might expect, let's start with the first game.
Dark Souls is the one that brought From Software into the spotlight and for a good reason. Not only is it a challenging game but it has some masterfully executed aspects, such as the interconnectedness of all areas in the first chapter with the Firelink Shrine hub.
It is slower than Dark Souls 2 and 3, giving newcomers to the series the perfect introduction to the mechanics that will ease them into all Soulsborne games.
Dark Souls 2 is easily the least-liked one on the list and it's mostly because it feels like a "low-effort Dark Souls". There is less attention to detail, map and enemy designs are not as good as the first game's and while it boasts the largest number of bosses in the series, they are often heeding the principles of "quantity over quality", which is the opposite of the original.
This makes it the perfect candidate to leave out if you are looking to purchase just one or two entries in the series.
Dark Souls 3 is often seen as the best one in the series but that view is largely subjective as there are others who still love the original more. Without a doubt, the third entry features some of the best boss fights in the series but it also has a few frustrating encounters that mess with the camera too much, with the challenge not coming from the way a boss is crafted but from the game's technical limitations.
In any case, it is a great time and it's a tough time choosing between the first and the third game. The third one is more pacey, however, which means the first entry could still be a better choice for a newcomer to ease themselves into the genre.
