Blade Runner is a rather well-known universe and when a game in it is announced, it is bound to make waves but something about Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth's announcement still feels mystifying and yet it just won't let off the gamers' curiosity.
The game's announcement didn't reveal the release window, genre or much of the premise but besides the brand recognition, it captured attention in large part due to being both published and developed by Annapurna Interactive.
Considering the company has been responsible for publishing gems like Outer Wilds and Stray, one starts to get the picture of why it's such a big deal.
The company has a knack for picking up works of art consistently so whenever their name pops up on a game, people are immediately curious to see what it's all about.
However, there wasn't much to see in the trailer as it served its purpose of announcing a new game and nothing else as it didn't spoil the story but neither did it reveal important parts of a game's creation, like the genre itself.
Additionally, this is Annapurna's first in-house game, which is interesting on its own since barely anyone knew they were also moving to develop titles as opposed to just publishing them.
One thing that the trailer did reveal is the premise. The player will take the role of a Blade Runner in a period when there are virtually no Replicants to be found.
After the Blackout in 2022, Wallace Corporation acquired Tyrell Corporation and resumed Replicant production a decade later so there is a story nugget that will give you a clue about what causes the Blade Runner in 2033 to be reinstated.
