Badlands brings the game to new desert area where the environment poses significant challenges

Bohemia Interactive announces DayZ: Badlands, a 267km² desert expansion launching in 2026. Expect extreme heat, scarce water, faction warfare and survival like never before.

Bohemia Interactive has officially announced DayZ: Badlands, the third major expansion to the popular survival MMO. The new expansion, set for release in 2026, will introduce players to a scorching desert region known as the Nasdara Province.

As the largest official map in the DayZ series, covering a vast area of 267 square kilometers, Badlands promises to redefine survival challenges in the post-apocalyptic sandbox genre with a narrative focused on extreme heat, scarcity of water, and treacherous terrain.

The Badlands is a parched and desolate terrain, a far cry from the verdant landscapes previously explored in DayZ. Set within the fictional Nasdara Province, the new expansion will feature sun-bleached and heat-scorched earth that has been scarred by the footsteps of war, nature, and man-made calamities over the years.

Nasdara Province: A New Map

The Nasdara Province, acting as the backdrop for the new map, is home to the eponymous Badlands region. This new area is one of several provinces in the fictional world of DayZ, which also includes regions such as Chernarus and Takistan.

The map's location is inland, west of the Chernarus map, and it borders the Takistan region to the south.

The environment in DayZ: Badlands is a relentless and unforgiving one. Survival is a constant challenge in the Badlands, with dehydration and heat exhaustion as the core focus.

Players will have to find or create shelter to protect themselves from the punishing daytime temperatures, scavenge for water to prevent dehydration, and plan their movements and scavenging activities around the more forgiving cooler periods of day and night.

As they traverse the sun-scorched dunes and mountainous regions of Nasdara, survivors must contend with a new roster of region-adapted infected, discover unique loot, and write the emergent stories that define the world of DayZ.

Badlands presents a departure from previous maps like Chernarus. While Chernarus features forests and open plains, Nasdara is a sea of sand and scorching sun with remnants of older, past civilizations, failed invasions, and all sorts of horrors that the sun has failed to scorch away.

Some of the notable features include rock formations, wide plateaus and mesas, and canyons. The Nasdara Province is a diverse one, with deserts that abruptly shift into rugged mountains.

This environmental diversity not only makes Nasdara interesting to the eye but also creates some mechanics and challenges unique to the region.

Dynamic Storytelling and Faction Gameplay

The gameplay in the Badlands revolves around managing the scorching heat and humidity. Survivors will need to actively seek shade and shelter, especially during the peak of the day, and take measures to prevent dehydration.

This could mean finding or purifying water sources, constructing makeshift shelters, and rethinking how to traverse Nasdara without dying an untimely death from exhaustion or heat.

Movement could now be much slower and mostly nocturnal, forcing players to adapt their scavenging and exploration strategies. The heat also serves as a gameplay challenge in itself, with hotter days encouraging faster but stealthier movement to conserve energy.
