THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games have been both praised and reviled for the different direction they took with Darksiders 3, but the end results look promising as THQ Nordic announced the game recouped development and marketing costs.

THQ Nordic have posted a financial report recently, stating that their Austria-based businesses saw a 38 per cent increase in net sales, to SEK 352 million (~€33.6 / ~$38 / ~£29.45 million), quoting Darksiders 3 as one of the leading factors for the increase.

The report also mentions that Darksiders 3 has recouped marketing and development costs so far as it performed "within management's range of expectations" and is likely to make major earnings in the future. To that end, the company will be looking to give these numbers a further boost by releasing Darksiders 3 DLC over the course of 2019.

To top it off, the report mentioned that Darksiders is still one "of the Group's key IPs" meaning that we are highly likely to see Darksiders 4 in the future. This is something fans were afraid they wouldn't see for a long while, due to the long period between releases of Darksiders 2 and 3. Hopefully, we will not have to wait another six years for a new instalment.

The reason fans have always wanted more Darksiders is because of the developers' tendency to give us a new protagonist with each game. Considering there are four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the game, four Darksiders instalments would offer us more closure than dropping the series due to bad financial performance. The paragraph after the picture contains mild spoilers for Darksiders 3, so continue at your own discretion.

Interest in Darksiders 4 spiked in every fan's heart after Strife was shown in-game. He first debuted as an illusion caused by Lust and later on revealed himself to be one of the protectors of the nearly-extinct human race. Getting to play with Strife as the protagonist would likely conclude the storyline that was started with the conspiracy that started with scapegoating War all those years ago.
