Daedalic Entertainment, the developer behind The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, has made the difficult decision to close its development arm following the game's disappointing performance. The company will now shift its focus to publishing other games instead.
This strategic shift comes after the release of Gollum, which was met with widespread criticism from both players and critics alike. In response, Daedalic Entertainment has expressed its appreciation for its team members and pledged to support them in finding new opportunities within its network.
With this change in direction, Daedalic Entertainment has halted the development of its other projects, including an action-adventure game set within The Lord of the Rings universe codenamed "It's Magic." The studio's decision to put these projects on hold demonstrates its commitment to reevaluating its approach to the Lord of the Rings franchise. However, Surviving Deponia, a single-player colony simulator announced earlier in June, will continue as planned with AtomicTorch taking over as the primary developer.
The release of The Lord of the Rings: Gollum on May 25 proved to be a major disappointment for Daedalic Entertainment. Despite generating $400,000 in sales and briefly reaching the sixth spot on the U.K. sales chart during its first week, the game failed to meet expectations, according to some reports.
The negative reception was largely attributed to issues such as Gollum's character model and the typeface used throughout the game. In response to the backlash, the studio tweeted an apology, promising to address the bugs and technical issues. While the studio has since remained silent, reports indicate that a patch is currently in the works.
