In a recent stream, Cyberpunk 2077 quest designer Patrick K. Mills discussed the main quest and how The Witcher 3 complaints indirectly shaped its campaign.
As you'd expect, fans wanted to know how long the campaign is, which as the years go by is becoming a really difficult question to answer. How long for who? What about exploration, side-quests and all that? Do you add it all up and take mid-value as fact?
Nevertheless, Cyberpunk 2077's main campaign is shorter than that of The Witcher 3 due to a combination of in-game metrics and long discussions with fans.
"We do know that the main story run in Cyberpunk 2077 is slightly shorter than in The Witcher 3, because we got a lot of complaints about The Witcher 3's main story just being too long. And looking at the metrics, tremendous numbers of people played through that game and really far, but never made it to the end", Mills said.
If you've watched the third episode of Night City Wire , then you know just how immense Cyberpunk 2077's city is, and it's not just the size. Megabuildings hide smaller ones and the streets and back alleys have tons of mini-stories and side-quests that in-game explorers can stumble upon and take a break from the main storyline.
Hence CDPR's reluctance to provide exact numbers. "So we did shorten the main story but we have lots to do, and in terms of a completionist campaign, I just don't have that number", Mills added.
If you're interested in learning more about Night City, CDPR put up an actual website that has just about everything you need to know about the city and its districts. For maximum immersion, you'll find election campaigns, product advertisements and even a body count counter that depicts the more violent side of Cyberpunk 2077's urban backdrop.
